The “SAHAN” Project, commencing in April 2010, will provide an integrated service for the Somali Community that will comprise of weekly drop in sessions to provide information, advice and referrals, monthly advice workshops, volunteering and work placements, healthy living and confidence building activities, and strategic partnership building.
“SAHAN” is a Somali Nomadic word meaning to scope or find out on behalf of the community. The SAHAN Project seeks to provide an integrated and holistic service for the Somali Community which can act as a focus for the Somali community in Wales and improve their current situation as one of the most ‘perennially disadvantaged’ and politically invisible communities in the UK.
The project will focus on the distinct, but inter-related needs of Somali young people, Somali women, Somali males and Somali elders, in order to:
- enable Somalis to access practical, integrated and direct help to help themselves;
- support members of the Somali community to achieve increased public support and recognition of their needs as a community in Wales, thus enabling their diverse and long term needs to be met.
The project also aims to build capacity, intergenerational understanding and social capital to internally strengthen the Somali community in Wales.
Funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
